Gobi GurvanSaikhan National Park is a national park located in southern Mongolia. The park was first established in 1965 and then expanded to its current size in 1993.

National park covers nearly 2,694,307 hectares, the Gobi GurvanSaikhan National Park is the largest national park in Mongolia – stretching 380 km from east to west and 80 km from north to south.

The gobi gurvansaikhan national park is located on the northern edge of the Gobi Desert. Steppe plateaus with elevations up to 2,600 meters are found at higher altitudes. The national parks is also home to a number of endangered creatures, including the snow leopard and Gobi camel.

Sand dunes can be found throughout the region, most notably the Singing Sands of Khongoryn Els. A major tourist destination connected via a paved road and a mountain valley with Dalanzadgad is Yolyn Am, which contains a huge ice field all year long.

Why it is called Gobi Gurvan Saikhan?

The park is named for the Gurvan Saikhan Mountains, which translates to the Three Beauties. The west beauty, east beauty and the middle beauty are the three parts into which the mountain is divided.

  • The gobi gurvansaikhan national park is a haven for some endangered species like the argali sheep (wild sheep), snow leopard and Siberian ibex. In total, 52 species of mammals are registered in this area, among which eight are protected species.
  • Bird enthusiasts will have about 245 species to view when exploring the park, including the lammergeier and other vultures.
  • More than 620 species of endemic plants from Central Asia grow there. Gurvan Saikhan mountain has rich fauna and flora.
  • Around 5,000 nomadic people live amongst the national park borders in Mongolia. They make a living by herding goats and sheep, and provide visitors with a glimpse into the culture and history of the country.
