How to Build a Yurt:
Mongolian yurts have been used for centuries as portable homes for nomadic people. Today, they are becoming increasingly popular as permanent structures, due to their unique design and environmental friendliness. If you’re interested in how to build a Mongolian yurt, here’s what you need to know.
Decide Yurts or Gers?
There are two distinct types of yurts: gers and bentwood yurts. The only distinction between modern yurts is the shape of their roof. A ger is a more traditional style of the yurt. The first start from the roof of a ger is constructed.

Planning and Preparation to build a yurt
Planning and preparation are the cornerstones of successful yurt construction. Before diving into the building process, it’s crucial to consider several key factors. Start by determining the size and design of your dream yurt. Are you envisioning a cozy retreat or a spacious family home? The intended use of the yurt—whether as a permanent residence, vacation home, or temporary shelter—will significantly influence its size, design, and features.
Next, think about the materials you’ll need. Traditional Mongolian yurts often use felt and wood, but modern adaptations might incorporate reflective insulation or other advanced materials. It’s also essential to check local building codes and regulations to ensure your yurt complies with all requirements. This step is particularly important if you plan to build a yurt as a permanent structure.
Consider the climate and weather conditions of your chosen location. For instance, if you’re building in an area prone to high winds, you’ll need a yurt with a sturdy roof and walls. Proper planning and preparation will set the foundation for a smooth building process and a durable, comfortable yurt.
Foundation and Platform
A solid foundation is vital for any yurt, and the platform is where it all begins. Your yurt platform should be built on a level surface and match the diameter of the perimeter of the yurt. There are several options to consider, including raised platforms and concrete footings to build a yurt.
A standard yurt platform typically rises about 6 inches above the ground, providing a stable base. However, raised platforms can offer additional benefits, such as extra storage space or room for electrical wiring beneath the yurt floor. For those seeking maximum durability, concrete platforms are an excellent choice. They provide a robust foundation and are ideal for incorporating in-floor radiant heat, ensuring your yurt stays warm and cozy.
When constructing your yurt platform, it’s essential to use high-quality materials and follow proper construction techniques. The platform should include a center ring to support the top edge of the structure and have a sturdy foundation to bear the weight of the yurt. A well-built platform is the first step toward a successful yurt construction project.
Lattice Wall and Door Frame Construction
The lattice wall and door frame are integral components of your yurt, providing both structural support and secure access. The lattice wall, often referred to as the wall lattice, helps distribute the weight of the yurt requires the roof evenly and adds stability to the yurt construction.
When building the lattice wall, it’s crucial to use high-quality materials and adhere to proper construction techniques. The lattice wall should be securely attached to the other yurt wall and platform, ensuring a stable and durable structure. The door frame, another critical element, should also be built with a sturdy frame and securely attached to the lattice wall. This ensures a safe and reliable entrance and exit for yurt owners.
A well-constructed lattice wall, windows and door frame not only enhance the structural integrity of your yurt but also contribute to its overall aesthetic appeal. By paying attention to these details, you’ll build a yurt that is both functional and beautiful, ready to withstand the elements and provide a comfortable living space.

Mongolian yurt price
The average cost of a Mongolian yurt is around $5,000. However, the cost can range from $1,500 to $30,000 depending on the quality of the materials and the size of the yurt.
The most expensive yurts are made with hand-woven felt and can be as large as 30 feet in diameter. The least expensive yurts are made with machine-made felt and can be as small as 10 feet in diameter.
There are also many different styles of yurts, so the price will vary depending on the type of yurt you choose.
If you are looking for a more permanent solution, you can purchase a yurt kit, which includes all the materials you need to build your own yurt.
The cost of building a yurt kit starts at around $5,000. However, if you hire a professional to help you assemble the yurt, the cost can increase to as much as $10,000.
Furnishing a Traditional Mongolian Yurt
The furniture inside a traditional Mongolian yurt is painted in a vibrant orange hue, adorned with colorful symbolic patterns inspired by nature, much like the wooden structure itself.
Beds, which also double as sofas during the day, are placed on either side of the entrance. Directly opposite the door, a third bed or a cupboard is often positioned, typically serving as a space for the family altar, photographs, and cherished personal items.
A low coffee table and small stools are arranged in front of the central support posts, providing a communal space. Between these posts stands the stove—the heart of the yurt—where the mother prepares meals, and its warmth sustains the family through Mongolia’s harsh winters.
To the left of the entrance, a small cabinet with a sink and a water reserve is sometimes installed, allowing guests to wash their hands upon arrival.
Despite its enclosed exterior, the interior of a Mongolian yurt is surprisingly bright. The central opening around the perimeter, partially covered with felt, allows natural light to filter through while accommodating the stove’s chimney. Sunlight streams in from above, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere inside.
